COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education in School Counseling at Wright State University is a competitive graduate program that admits students twice a year for spring and fall entry, with application deadlines of August 1 for spring admission and December 1 for fall admission, and only complete applications are reviewed, followed by a required group interview for selected candidates; admission typically requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 (with conditional admission possible below this level with approval), at least three letters of recommendation, and a statement of educational and professional goals, along with a departmental review process that evaluates candidates for readiness to enter the counseling profession. After initial screening, eligible applicants are invited to a three-hour group interview designed to assess key professional dispositions such as communication skills, interpersonal effectiveness, cultural sensitivity, technological literacy, motivation for the counseling field, understanding of the professional role, and ability to work collaboratively in group settings, as well as overall poise, commitment, and self-awareness regarding strengths and weaknesses relevant to becoming a school counselor. Successful candidates are typically notified within approximately two weeks after the interview and are then invited to an orientation session held shortly afterward to help them transition into the program and address academic expectations and student support resources. The program emphasizes preparing students to work effectively in diverse educational environments, and the admissions process is designed not only to evaluate academic readiness but also to assess personal qualities essential for counseling practice, including empathy, ethical awareness, and cultural competence.
