COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Computer Science at Wright State University is a competitive graduate program designed for students with a background in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field, typically requiring a minimum GPA of around 3.0 along with strong preparation in programming, data structures, computer organization, and operating systems equivalent to courses like CS 3100, CEG 3310, and CEG 4350, while additional readiness in calculus, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics is preferred and deficiencies may be addressed through preparatory coursework or placement exams; the program develops advanced problem-solving and abstract reasoning skills in computer science and prepares graduates to apply modern computational techniques to complex real-world problems across software systems, algorithms, and computing theory, supported by strong facilities including Linux, Mac OS, and Windows-based computing labs, specialized environments such as internet security, visualization and animation theaters, and advanced research infrastructure at the Appenzeller Visualization Laboratory, along with access to cutting-edge research areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, computer vision, cybersecurity, bioinformatics, distributed systems, and software engineering; students can choose either a thesis or non-thesis pathway, both requiring a minimum of 30 credit hours, with the non-thesis option emphasizing structured coursework including 12 hours of advanced CS/CEG electives and core courses such as Algorithm Design and Analysis plus one advanced systems or software course, while the thesis option replaces part of coursework with up to 9 credit hours of research culminating in an approved master’s thesis; both pathways require completion within six years and ensure at least 16 credit hours in CS-level graduate courses, combining theoretical depth with applied training to prepare graduates for careers in software engineering, systems development, data science, AI research, or further doctoral study in computing fields.
