COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Biological Sciences at Wright State University is a research-focused graduate program designed to build advanced knowledge in biology while developing strong scientific, analytical, and communication skills. The program requires a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours and includes both thesis and non-thesis options, allowing students to choose between intensive original research or a more coursework- and analysis-based pathway. Core requirements include training in scientific or technical writing, experimental design, and graduate seminars, along with additional advanced coursework in biological sciences at the 6000–8000 level. Students are expected to develop the ability to critically read and synthesize primary scientific literature, design and conduct biological experiments, analyze and interpret data, and effectively communicate scientific findings in both written and oral forms. Learning outcomes also emphasize developing expertise in a specific area of biology and understanding potential career paths in research, academia, industry, or applied biological fields. The thesis option focuses on original research leading to a defended dissertation, while the non-thesis option emphasizes advanced coursework, literature review, special problem studies, and a comprehensive oral examination. The program is supported by extensive facilities, including modern research laboratories, advanced instruments such as microscopes, spectrophotometers, flow cytometers, sequencers, mass spectrometers, and greenhouse and field research spaces, as well as access to a 200-acre biological preserve and collaborations with medical and research institutions including Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. These resources provide students with opportunities for both laboratory and field-based research in diverse biological disciplines. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in scientific research, healthcare, environmental science, biotechnology, and further doctoral study by combining rigorous academic training with hands-on research experience in a highly resource-rich environment.
