COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science in Aerospace Systems Engineering (M.S.A.S.E.) at Wright State University is a graduate program designed to combine theoretical study with practical, systems-level engineering experience in aerospace applications, preparing students for both industry careers and doctoral-level research. The program is structured differently from traditional aerospace engineering degrees because it emphasizes interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary learning, requiring students to complete a systems-focused curriculum similar in rigor to the university’s Ph.D. programs. Admission is competitive and requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field with a minimum GPA of 3.4, along with GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose; international applicants must also meet English proficiency requirements. The program learning outcomes focus on developing strong engineering competency in aerospace systems, the ability to apply advanced analytical methods to complex engineering problems, and effective communication of technical results in written and oral forms. Students complete a 30-credit curriculum that includes core courses in advanced fluid dynamics, structural analysis, computational methods, and aerospace-specific subjects such as propulsion, aeronautics, and compressible flow, along with a required mathematics course and a two-course interdisciplinary subspecialty. Students may choose between a thesis option, involving original research culminating in a defended dissertation, or a non-thesis option that includes additional advanced coursework at the 7000 level, with a requirement for substantial graduate-level credit. The program is supported by extensive engineering facilities including wind tunnels, materials and structural testing labs, heat transfer and fluid dynamics labs, electron microscopy, micro-fabrication facilities, and advanced computational resources, including access to the Ohio Supercomputer through OARnet. Students also benefit from potential collaboration with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and other industry partners. Overall, the program is designed to develop highly skilled aerospace engineers capable of solving complex, multidisciplinary problems in modern aerospace systems through a blend of advanced coursework, computational training, and research exposure.
