COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in School Counseling at Wright State University offers a comprehensive curriculum focused on counseling approaches, lifespan development, and comprehensive school counseling models that prepare graduates to serve students in K–12 educational settings. Coursework includes specialized training in crisis counseling, counseling exceptional students, managing problematic student behaviors, and understanding family systems, ensuring that students develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to address diverse student needs. Admission to the program is competitive and requires a minimum 3.0 GPA, although conditional admission may be granted in certain cases with departmental approval. Applicants must also submit three letters of recommendation, a statement of educational and professional goals, and successfully complete a group interview that evaluates professional readiness, interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, motivation, technological competence, and understanding of the counseling profession. The program admits students twice annually, with application deadlines of August 1 for Spring admission and December 1 for Fall admission. Accepted students participate in an orientation session before beginning their studies. The program is designed to accommodate both full-time and part-time students, making it suitable for working professionals such as teachers and other education personnel. Program outcomes demonstrate strong student success and career readiness. During the 2024–25 academic year, the program enrolled 32 students and graduated 12 students. Approximately 67 percent of graduates completed the program within the expected three-year timeframe, while many others took longer due to part-time enrollment and personal or professional responsibilities. Graduate performance on licensure examinations was particularly strong, with roughly 90 percent passing the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) examination on their first attempt and 100 percent passing after a second attempt when needed. Employment outcomes were equally impressive, with all surveyed graduates securing positions in the field within six months of graduation. Overall, the program combines rigorous academic preparation, structured admissions standards, flexible study options, strong licensure performance, and excellent employment outcomes to prepare future school counselors for successful careers supporting the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students in diverse educational environments.
