COURSE CURRICULUM

Wright State University’s Adolescence to Young Adult (AYA) education program has specific admission requirements designed to ensure that candidates are academically prepared and meet professional standards for teacher licensure. Applicants may qualify through two main pathways. The first pathway is for students who already hold a relevant Wright State bachelor’s degree, such as a Bachelor of Arts in English with an Integrated Language Arts concentration, Social Science Education, Mathematics Education, Chemistry Education, Earth and Environmental Sciences with a Life Science/Earth Science Education focus, or Physics Education. The second pathway is for students who hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and meet additional academic and testing requirements. These include a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7, or a GPA between 2.6 and 2.69 combined with a strong academic record in the final 60 semester hours with a 3.0 or higher. Applicants must also complete prerequisite content-specific coursework with a grade of C or better and demonstrate readiness through field experience requirements and a dispositional assessment known as the Candidate Disposition Inventory. In addition, candidates must show competency in reading, mathematics, and writing through nationally recognized standardized tests such as ACT, SAT, Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators, or GRE, with specific minimum score thresholds required for each area. Reading, math, and writing benchmarks are clearly defined, for example ACT Reading 19+, Math 17+, and Writing 6+, or equivalent scores on SAT, Praxis, or GRE exams. Applicants must also pass the Ohio Assessment for Educators exam in their chosen subject area to qualify for licensure eligibility. It is important to note that test score validity may depend on when the exam was taken, as standards can change over time. Because accreditation and licensure requirements are periodically updated, prospective students are advised to consult advisors regularly to ensure they meet the most current admission criteria and remain aligned with Ohio Department of Education licensure expectations.
