COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Athletic Training program at Wright State University is structured as a two-year, 56-credit curriculum that integrates classroom instruction, clinical education, and hands-on professional training across sequential fall, spring, and summer terms. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through courses such as Orthopedic Anatomy (ATR 7000), Essentials of Athletic Training (ATR 7100), Emergent and Acute Care (ATR 7200), Orthopedic Assessment (ATR 7300), Therapeutic Interventions (ATR 7400), and Clinical Practice experiences (ATR 7150 and ATR 7350), while also beginning coursework in biomechanics and research methods to strengthen scientific and analytical understanding of human movement and healthcare practice. Year 2 advances students into more complex clinical and professional competencies, including Neuroscience in Athletic Training (ATR 7600), Clinical Reasoning (ATR 7700), Medical Conditions and Interventions (ATR 7500), Administrative Concepts (ATR 7800), and additional Clinical Practice experiences (ATR 7550, ATR 7750, ATR 7950) that emphasize real-world patient care under supervision. Students also complete supporting coursework in counseling techniques, ethics, and evidence-based research methods, ensuring they are prepared for both the technical and interpersonal demands of healthcare practice. A distinctive feature of the program is the structured clinical education model, including supervised clinical placements with healthcare partners and a required preseason clinical experience that bridges summer and fall terms, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in real patient care settings. This immersive structure ensures progressive skill development, from basic assessment and emergency care in the first year to advanced clinical reasoning and independent decision-making in the second year. Overall, the program is designed to produce highly competent, certified athletic trainers who are prepared for professional practice in sports medicine, rehabilitation, and allied healthcare environments.
