COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Social Work (M.A.S.W.) program at Wright State University provides a structured and professionally accredited pathway for students seeking advanced education and licensure in social work. Admission to the program requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75, and at least a 3.0 GPA in social work or behavioral science coursework. Applicants must also have completed prerequisite courses in behavioral sciences, including psychology, sociology, or anthropology, as well as coursework in American history, government, or economics, human biology, and statistics. The application process includes submission of two professional or academic reference letters and a detailed personal statement that demonstrates understanding of the social work profession, career goals, relevant employment, volunteer activities, leadership experiences, and other experiences that support readiness for graduate social work education. The program does not award academic credit for life or work experience. Students may choose between concentrations in Advanced Generalist: Children and Families or Advanced Generalist: Older Adults, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific populations and professional interests. For students who already hold a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)-accredited program, the Advanced Standing option provides an accelerated pathway that can be completed in three semesters beginning in the summer term. Eligibility for Advanced Standing requires a BSW earned within the previous five years, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, a minimum 3.25 GPA in undergraduate social work courses, and documented positive field practicum performance. The curriculum prepares students for advanced generalist practice through a combination of classroom learning and professional field experiences that develop skills in assessment, intervention, advocacy, leadership, and ethical decision-making. Graduates are prepared to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities in a variety of settings, including healthcare, mental health, child welfare, schools, community agencies, and social service organizations. Overall, the program combines rigorous academic standards, practical training, flexible study pathways, and specialized concentration options to prepare students for successful professional social work careers and future licensure opportunities.
