COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Neuroscience at Wright State University is a rigorous 120-credit interdisciplinary program that combines neuroscience, physiology, biology, chemistry, psychology, physics, and mathematics to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how the human body and nervous system function. The program emphasizes the relationships between multiple scientific disciplines and trains students to apply scientific knowledge to biomedical and health-related challenges. Students develop the ability to model how organ systems work together to maintain life, understand the connections between neuroscience and other scientific fields, apply the scientific method to new problems, communicate scientific information effectively, and collaborate with peers in research and professional settings. The curriculum includes foundational courses in psychology, biology, chemistry, calculus, statistics, physics, biochemistry, anatomy, and organic chemistry, followed by specialized neuroscience and physiology coursework such as How the Nervous System Works I and II, Human Structure and Function, neuroscience research methods, and laboratory-based learning experiences. A significant strength of the program is its strong emphasis on hands-on research, with students participating in advanced laboratory techniques, independent research projects, and a senior capstone experience involving either laboratory research or scientific review and experimental design. Students can further customize their education through electives in areas such as developmental neuroscience, computational neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral neuroscience, neuropathology, epidemiology, molecular biology, cancer biology, cell signaling, health communication, medical Spanish, and medical French. The program prepares graduates for a wide range of careers and advanced studies, including medicine, neuroscience, physiology, biomedical research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare professions, public health, scientific writing, education, law, and public policy.
