COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Wright State University is a comprehensive 120-credit-hour degree designed for students seeking advanced mathematical knowledge, graduate study preparation, or careers in quantitative and technology-driven fields. Students must earn at least a C grade in Calculus I and maintain a 2.0 GPA for admission into the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The program develops strong problem-solving abilities, mathematical reasoning, proof-writing skills, and the ability to communicate complex mathematical concepts effectively. Students can choose from several concentrations, including General Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Mathematics Education, and Dual Major. The General Mathematics concentration focuses on advanced topics such as differential equations, linear algebra, real analysis, modern algebra, and higher-level electives. The Applied Mathematics concentration combines mathematics with modeling, numerical methods, programming, and technical applications useful in engineering and scientific industries. The Data Science concentration integrates mathematics, statistics, computer programming, machine learning, and data analysis, making it highly relevant for modern technology and analytics careers. The Mathematics Education concentration prepares students for secondary-school teaching and can lead toward Ohio Adolescent to Young Adult Mathematics licensure through additional teacher education requirements. Students complete coursework in calculus, differential equations, proof writing, algebra, analysis, statistics, computer programming, and mathematical modeling while also fulfilling general education requirements in writing, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. High-achieving students may participate in an Honors Program, and qualified students can accelerate their education through a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree pathway. Career opportunities include data scientist, data analyst, actuary, statistician, software developer, financial analyst, operations researcher, mathematician, educator, government analyst, and research scientist. Among all concentrations, the Data Science concentration generally offers the strongest job market demand and salary potential because it combines mathematics, statistics, programming, and machine learning skills that are highly sought after across industries such as technology, finance, healthcare, business analytics, artificial intelligence, and consulting.
