COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering (BSMSE) at Wright State University is a 120-credit engineering degree that prepares students to develop, test, improve, and manufacture advanced materials used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, energy, healthcare, nanotechnology, and advanced manufacturing. Admission to the program requires at least 24 college credit hours, a minimum 2.25 GPA in major courses, and grades of C or higher in key courses including engineering programming, engineering design, chemistry, physics, and introductory engineering mathematics. The curriculum combines mathematics, chemistry, physics, engineering fundamentals, materials characterization, metallurgy, polymers, ceramics, nanomaterials, thermodynamics, diffusion, failure analysis, and capstone design projects. Students can specialize through concentrations in General Materials Science or Manufacturing and may study emerging topics such as fuel cells, energy materials, additive manufacturing, corrosion, computational materials science, and nanotechnology. The program emphasizes practical laboratory experience, experimentation, data analysis, teamwork, communication, ethics, and engineering design skills. Graduates learn to solve complex engineering problems, design innovative materials-based solutions, conduct research, and apply scientific principles to real-world industrial challenges. A combined bachelor’s and master’s degree option allows qualified students to begin graduate-level study during their senior year and complete both degrees in less time. Career opportunities include Materials Engineer, Metallurgical Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Process Engineer, Quality Engineer, Research and Development Engineer, Nanotechnology Engineer, Semiconductor Engineer, Battery Technology Engineer, and Materials Scientist. The degree has strong future prospects because modern technologies such as electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, advanced electronics, aerospace components, medical implants, and artificial intelligence hardware all depend on new and improved materials. Compared with many traditional engineering fields, Materials Science and Engineering is highly innovation-focused and research-oriented. Overall, the program offers excellent long-term job demand, strong salary potential, opportunities for advanced study and research, and the chance to contribute directly to technological breakthroughs that shape future industries and global development.
