COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography B.S. program is a science and technology–focused degree that explores the interaction between human and physical environments while emphasizing the use of modern geospatial tools and data analysis. The program prepares students to understand how people, places, and environmental systems are interconnected and how global issues such as climate change, geopolitics, urban development, public health, and economic shifts shape the world. A major strength of the program is its strong focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartography, and spatial data analysis, which are widely used in industries such as urban planning, environmental management, disaster response, public safety, agriculture, and national security. Students begin with foundational courses in physical geography, human geography, and world regional geography, and then progress into advanced technical training in GIS applications, remote sensing technologies, and digital mapping. The curriculum also includes an internship experience that provides real-world exposure to professional geography-related work. In addition, students complete coursework in computer science or programming, communication, political science, sociology, and anthropology to strengthen analytical, technical, and interdisciplinary thinking skills. The program emphasizes critical thinking, data interpretation, problem-solving, and effective communication, especially in writing and presenting spatial and social data. Students also develop an understanding of cultural diversity and global awareness, which is essential for working in international and multicultural environments. Supporting coursework in statistics, research methods, and critical thinking further enhances their ability to analyze complex geographic and societal problems.
