COURSE CURRICULUM

The Art program at Wright State University offers comprehensive Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degrees that combine creative exploration, technical skill development, and professional preparation. The B.F.A. program allows students to specialize in one of four concentrations—Painting, Photography, Printmaking, or Sculpture—while benefiting from extensive studio facilities, individualized instruction, and opportunities for artistic growth. The Painting concentration emphasizes both traditional and contemporary approaches, helping students develop strong technical foundations while encouraging experimentation and personal expression. Dedicated painting studios provide spacious work areas, specialized equipment, and 24-hour access. The Photography concentration combines traditional, digital, and alternative photographic processes, enabling students to develop technical expertise and artistic vision through access to professional darkrooms, digital laboratories, cameras, printers, and lighting equipment. The Printmaking concentration introduces students to a wide range of image-making techniques, including intaglio, lithography, relief printing, silkscreen, monotype, and photomechanical processes, supported by fully equipped studios and around-the-clock access. The Sculpture concentration explores both traditional and contemporary practices, including modeling, carving, casting, fabrication, installation, performance, and digital media. Students work in specialized facilities featuring wood and metal shops, welding equipment, clay studios, kilns, digital media resources, and outdoor workspaces. Across all concentrations, students develop creative problem-solving abilities, technical proficiency, critical thinking skills, and a strong understanding of artistic concepts and visual communication. The program encourages independent learning and self-expression while preparing students for careers in fine arts, design, education, photography, digital media, gallery and museum work, and related creative industries. Many graduates continue into competitive graduate programs in fine arts, applied arts, and art education. The School of Fine and Performing Arts also offers talent-based scholarships for incoming students, with awards of up to $3,000 per year during the first two years of study. Scholarship applicants submit portfolios, references, and academic records for review, allowing talented students to receive financial support while pursuing their artistic goals. Overall, the program provides a rich combination of artistic training, professional resources, creative freedom, and career preparation, helping students develop into skilled and innovative visual artists.
