COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Wright State University is designed to provide students with both a strong academic foundation and valuable real-world experience in politics, government, law, and international affairs. The program focuses on three major areas of study: American Government and Politics, International Relations and Comparative Politics, and Public Law and Political Theory. In American Government and Politics, students examine the structure and operation of federal, state, and local governments, including legislatures, courts, executives, political parties, interest groups, elections, public opinion, and the media, with internships strongly encouraged. The International Relations and Comparative Politics concentration explores political systems and global issues across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, covering topics such as foreign policy, national security, terrorism, intelligence, diplomacy, conflict resolution, and human rights, while encouraging participation in Model United Nations and study-abroad programs. The Public Law and Political Theory area focuses on constitutional law, the Supreme Court, civil liberties, criminal justice, environmental law, international law, political ideologies, ethics, political psychology, bioethics, and law-related social issues, making it especially valuable for students interested in law school or legal careers. A major strength of the program is its emphasis on experiential learning, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge through internships and leadership opportunities. Students may participate in state legislative internships, congressional district office placements, city government positions, internships at the Ohio Statehouse, and even opportunities in Washington, D.C. The program also sponsors a highly successful National Model United Nations team that has earned national championships for nearly four decades. Students benefit from support provided by both academic and faculty advisors who guide them through degree planning and career preparation. Graduates develop strong analytical, leadership, communication, and critical-thinking skills that prepare them for careers in government, law, public policy, international relations, nonprofit organizations, political consulting, diplomacy, public administration, journalism, and graduate or professional studies, making the degree an excellent choice for students interested in public service and civic leadership.
