COURSE CURRICULUM

The Modern Languages B.A. (French or Spanish concentration) is an interdisciplinary degree designed to develop strong language proficiency, cultural understanding, and critical thinking skills through the study of Francophone or Hispanophone languages and cultures. The program helps students achieve advanced communication abilities in speaking, writing, listening, and reading, reaching at least Intermediate High proficiency according to ACTFL guidelines. Along with language mastery, students gain in-depth knowledge of literature, history, politics, media, and social systems of French- and Spanish-speaking regions, allowing them to understand the complexity and diversity of global cultures. The curriculum emphasizes both linguistic development and intercultural competence, enabling students to analyze cultural products such as films, literature, and media while comparing them with their own cultural context. Students begin with foundational and intermediate language courses and progress to advanced conversation, writing, literature, phonetics or phonology, and cultural studies, along with upper-level electives that deepen specialization. The program also includes opportunities for study abroad and prior learning credit, allowing students to enhance fluency through real-world immersion and prior experience. A key component of the degree is developing the ability to communicate effectively in multiple time frames and contexts, as well as conducting basic research and cultural analysis. In addition to language courses, students complete general education requirements in communication, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and natural sciences, as well as courses in critical thinking and research methods. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, translation, interpretation, international business, diplomacy, government services, healthcare, tourism, media, and nonprofit organizations. The degree also provides a strong foundation for graduate studies in languages, humanities, international relations, or related fields. Overall, the program equips students with global communication skills, cultural intelligence, and adaptability, making them valuable in an increasingly interconnected and multilingual world.
