COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Biological Sciences at Wright State University is a flexible, interdisciplinary degree that combines a strong foundation in biology with the opportunity to explore interests outside the sciences. Designed for students seeking a broader liberal arts education than the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program, the degree allows students to focus on areas such as health sciences, molecular and cellular biology, microbiology, ecology, conservation biology, or science education while incorporating electives, minors, certificates, and microcredentials that support individual career goals. The program develops scientific reasoning, critical thinking, quantitative analysis, research skills, and effective communication through coursework in genetics, cell biology, ecology, evolution, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and statistics. Students learn how DNA, RNA, and proteins function, how traits are inherited, how cells and organisms operate, and how ecosystems respond to environmental changes, including climate change. Laboratory experiences and advanced biology courses teach students to formulate hypotheses, design experiments, analyze data, interpret scientific literature, and communicate biological information to both scientific and general audiences. Two concentration options are available. The General Life Science concentration provides advanced biological science electives and substantial flexibility through additional life science and non-science coursework, making it ideal for students interested in healthcare professions, biotechnology, research, environmental science, or interdisciplinary careers. The Life and Earth Science Education concentration combines biology, earth science, astronomy, climate science, and education courses to prepare students for licensure in Adolescence to Young Adult Education in Ohio. The curriculum includes opportunities for internships, independent research, teaching assistantships, honors research, and capstone experiences such as current literature studies, conservation biology, marine biology, disease ecology, and advanced cell biology. Students may also participate in the department’s honors program if they maintain a strong academic record. The degree is especially attractive to transfer students because its flexible structure accommodates credits from two-year institutions and technical programs. Graduates are prepared for careers in healthcare, environmental conservation, biotechnology, research support, education, government agencies, and science communication, or for continued study in graduate and professional programs. Overall, the program offers a well-rounded scientific education while providing the flexibility needed to pursue diverse academic and career pathways.
