COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (MS) in Mathematics at Wichita State University is a 33-credit-hour graduate program designed to provide strong advanced training in mathematics and statistics while allowing students flexibility to align their studies with academic or professional goals. To complete the degree, students must earn at least 33 credit hours of graduate-level coursework, including a minimum of 24 credit hours in mathematics or statistics courses numbered 700 or above offered by the department. A key structural requirement of the program is the completion of three two-semester sequences in mathematics and/or statistics at the 700 level or higher, ensuring deep and sustained study in core mathematical areas. Students planning to pursue a PhD in applied mathematics are encouraged to include foundational sequences such as Real Analysis I and II (MATH 743 and MATH 843) and Numerical Linear Algebra (MATH 751), which provide essential preparation for advanced theoretical and computational work. The program typically allows up to 6 credit hours of transfer coursework from another institution, subject to departmental approval, and requires each student’s plan of study to be approved by the department to ensure academic coherence. Students may choose between a thesis or nonthesis option. Those selecting the thesis option may enroll in up to 6 credit hours of MATH 885 Thesis, and their comprehensive examination is conducted during the thesis defense, focusing primarily on the thesis work along with possibly two additional graduate courses. Nonthesis students must pass an oral comprehensive examination covering four 700-level or higher courses chosen by the student. In addition, all students must complete an applied learning or research experience, which may take the form of a thesis, conference presentation, community outreach activity, public seminar presentation, or a departmental research project followed by presentation. This requirement ensures that students engage in meaningful scholarly or professional communication beyond the classroom. Overall, the program emphasizes rigorous mathematical training, research exposure, and applied engagement, preparing graduates for doctoral study, academic careers, or advanced analytical roles in industry and government.
