COURSE CURRICULUM

Wichita State University’s Master of Science (MS) in Forensic Biology is a 34-credit-hour, practice-oriented graduate program designed to prepare students for advanced careers in forensic science laboratories, criminal justice agencies, and federal investigative organizations. The curriculum is structured to build expertise in forensic biology through a progressive sequence of core courses that integrate scientific theory, laboratory training, legal understanding, and research methodology. Students begin with foundational coursework such as FS 701 Forensic Science Overview I Seminar and FS 710 Forensic Biology I, which introduce key concepts in forensic practice and biological evidence analysis. As the program advances, students complete specialized courses including FS 720 Population Genetics, FS 721 Forensic Biology Serology and DNA Testing, and FS 711–FS 712 Forensic Biology II and III, which deepen technical knowledge in DNA profiling, serology, and forensic interpretation. Professional development is emphasized through FS 703 Professional Responsibility and Quality Assurance in Forensic Science and FS 706 Criminal Law for Forensic Scientists, ensuring students understand ethical standards, courtroom procedures, and legal frameworks relevant to forensic work. Research competency is developed through FS 704 Applied Forensic Science Research Methods and reinforced in the capstone sequence FS 730 and FS 731, where students design and complete original forensic biology research projects under faculty supervision. A key feature of the program is its strong applied learning component, which requires students to engage in hands-on training and real-world laboratory work in collaboration with the Center for Excellence and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) laboratories located on Wichita State’s Innovation Campus. Courses such as FS 710, FS 702, FS 711, FS 712, FS 713, FS 721, and FS 730 ensure continuous experiential learning and practical exposure to forensic casework environments. Overall, the program blends rigorous scientific education with applied forensic training, preparing graduates for professional certification, employment in crime laboratories, and further academic or research pursuits in forensic science and related disciplines.
