COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (MS) in Chemistry at Wichita State University is a 30-credit-hour, research-intensive graduate program designed to develop advanced expertise in chemistry while preparing students for careers in research, industry, government laboratories, and doctoral studies. Upon entering the program, all students must complete assessment examinations in analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry during their first semester. Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in at least four of these subject areas within their first year. Any deficiencies must be addressed by completing designated courses approved by the graduate affairs committee and earning a grade of B or higher. Assessment exams are offered twice annually during the fall and spring semesters. In addition, all students must successfully complete Professional and Scholarly Integrity Training by the end of their first year, ensuring a strong foundation in ethical research and professional conduct. The degree requires completion of 30 credit hours, including a substantial thesis based on original scientific research. Students must complete 6 credit hours of Research in Chemistry, which support the development and execution of an independent research project under faculty supervision. At least 15 credit hours must be earned in graduate-level chemistry courses numbered above 701, including Instrumental Methods for Research and at least three graduate chemistry core courses selected from CHEM 715 through CHEM 722. These advanced courses provide in-depth knowledge of modern chemical theory, laboratory techniques, and research methodologies. Students must also complete one credit hour of Chemistry Seminar and enroll in Chemistry Colloquium each semester throughout their degree program, allowing them to engage with current research, scientific presentations, and professional discussions within the chemistry community. The remaining coursework is selected in consultation with the student’s major advisor and the department’s graduate affairs committee to support individual research interests and career goals. A key component of the program is the completion and defense of a thesis based on original research, enabling students to contribute new knowledge to the field while developing advanced laboratory, analytical, problem-solving, and scientific communication skills. Graduates are well prepared for positions in chemical and pharmaceutical industries, biotechnology, environmental science, materials research, quality assurance, government laboratories, and doctoral programs, with strong expertise in both theoretical chemistry and independent scientific investigation.
