COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science (MS) in Aerospace Engineering at Wichita State University requires students to complete between 30 and 33 graduate credit hours while specializing in one of four major areas: Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Structures and Solid Mechanics, Flight Dynamics and Control, or Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design. Each student begins by completing nine credit hours of core courses related to their chosen specialization. Students focusing on Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics study topics such as intermediate aerodynamics, compressible fluid flow, and viscous fluid aerodynamics. Those in Structures and Solid Mechanics take courses in finite element analysis, elasticity theory, and vibration analysis. The Flight Dynamics and Control specialization includes advanced studies in flight control system design, flight dynamics, and engineering dynamics. Students pursuing Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design work with faculty advisors to develop an approved program tailored to their interests. In addition to the specialization courses, all students must complete at least one graduate-level mathematics or statistics course approved by the department, strengthening their analytical and research capabilities. The program offers three completion pathways. The Thesis Option is research-oriented and requires four additional graduate courses plus a minimum of six credit hours of thesis work, making it ideal for students interested in research or doctoral studies. The Directed Project Option requires six additional graduate courses along with a minimum of three credit hours dedicated to an approved engineering project, providing practical experience in solving real-world aerospace problems. The Coursework Option is designed for students seeking a broader academic focus and requires seven additional graduate courses together with an applied learning activity supervised by an aerospace engineering professor. This flexible curriculum allows students to customize their education according to their career goals while gaining advanced knowledge in aerospace engineering theory, analysis, design, and research. Graduates are well prepared for professional positions in aircraft and spacecraft design, research and development, defense industries, manufacturing, consulting, government agencies, and advanced doctoral programs in aerospace and related engineering fields.
