COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) at Wichita State University is a 39-credit graduate program designed to be completed over at least five semesters, with students typically beginning in the fall semester and having the option to study either online or on campus depending on their needs and circumstances. The program is structured around a core curriculum that builds foundational knowledge in public and nonprofit governance, research methods, public sector management, human resources administration, public sector economics, quantitative analysis, financial management, and a final capstone experience that integrates and applies learning across the program. Students complete eight core courses totaling 24 credit hours, followed by 15 credit hours of advisor-approved electives that allow them to tailor the degree toward specific interests within public administration, policy, or nonprofit management. The curriculum is designed to develop strong analytical, managerial, and leadership skills necessary for effective performance in public service roles at local, state, and federal levels, as well as in nonprofit and community organizations. Emphasis is placed on both theoretical understanding and practical application, ensuring that students are able to evaluate policy issues, manage public organizations, and apply quantitative and financial tools to real-world administrative challenges. The capstone course serves as a culminating academic experience in which students demonstrate mastery of program concepts through applied projects or comprehensive analysis. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers as public administrators, policy analysts, program managers, and organizational leaders by equipping them with the competencies required to design, implement, and evaluate public programs and services in diverse governance environments.
