COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing at Wichita State University is a 48-credit graduate program designed to develop advanced skills in fiction, poetry, and literary study while preparing students for careers as professional writers and teachers. The curriculum is divided into required and elective coursework, beginning with ENGL 700 (Introduction to Graduate Study in English), which introduces graduate-level research, criticism, and writing practice. Students then complete intensive creative writing workshops in fiction or poetry through courses such as ENGL 801, along with graduate studies seminars in fiction, poetry, or drama that deepen craft and critical understanding. Additional requirements include a literature seminar (such as contemporary literature or special topics), ENGL 780 (Advanced Theory and Practice in Composition), and a 2–6 credit MFA Final Writing Project, which consists of a publishable manuscript developed under faculty supervision. Students must also complete at least 3 credit hours outside the English department in humanities or related disciplines to broaden their academic perspective. A significant portion of the degree—15 credit hours—is dedicated to electives, allowing students to specialize in literary interests, strengthen writing techniques, or explore advanced topics in English studies. These electives may include upper-level English courses across genres, theory, and historical literature, with some flexibility for graduate-level study in approved 500–800 level courses. In addition to coursework, students must pass a comprehensive written examination based on a 30-book reading list selected in consultation with faculty, ensuring broad literary competence. The program emphasizes rigorous workshop critique, revision, and mentorship, culminating in a professional-quality manuscript intended for publication. Overall, the MFA is structured to balance creative production, literary scholarship, and teaching preparation, equipping graduates with the skills needed for careers in writing, publishing, academia, and cultural fields.
