COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Communication at Wichita State University offers two flexible pathways—an Academic Track and a Professional Track—allowing students to align their graduate education with either research-oriented or career-focused goals. The Academic Track is a 36-credit-hour program designed primarily for students interested in advanced communication research, teaching, or pursuing doctoral studies. Students complete core courses in Introduction to Communication Research, Empirical/Quantitative Research Methodology in Communication, and Contemporary Theories of Communication, along with six credit hours of thesis research. They also complete two advanced research methods courses and 15 credit hours of communication electives at the 500 level or higher. This track emphasizes research design, data analysis, communication theory, scholarly writing, and independent investigation, culminating in a master's thesis that demonstrates original research and academic expertise. The Professional Track is a 30-credit-hour option intended for students seeking advancement in communication-related careers such as public relations, advertising, journalism, corporate communication, digital media, nonprofit leadership, and organizational communication. Students complete Introduction to Communication Research, one advanced research methods course, and an applied learning experience through either the Shocker Ad Lab or a Professional Capstone course. The remainder of the curriculum consists of 21 credit hours of graduate-level communication electives, allowing students to customize their studies according to professional interests and career goals. Both tracks provide strong foundations in communication theory, research, strategic communication, media analysis, and professional communication practices. The program combines academic rigor with practical experience, helping students develop advanced skills in research, critical thinking, writing, public speaking, leadership, and problem-solving. Graduates are prepared for careers in corporate communication, public relations, advertising, media management, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, consulting, higher education, and research institutions. Students interested in doctoral education benefit from the Academic Track’s intensive research focus, while working professionals can leverage the Professional Track’s applied learning opportunities to enhance their expertise and career advancement.
