COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical Engineering at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 128 credit hours for graduation, including 71 credit hours of major coursework completed with at least a 2.0 GPA. Students must successfully complete all prerequisite courses with grades that generate at least 2.0 credit points per credit hour. The curriculum combines general education, mathematics, basic sciences, and specialized engineering courses to provide a comprehensive engineering education. Students complete general education requirements alongside foundational courses such as General Chemistry I, Engineering Ethics, and Calculus I. The mathematics and science component includes Calculus II, Calculus III, Differential Equations, Physics for Scientists I and II, and a university physics laboratory. The engineering and technical core develops knowledge in statics, mechanics of materials, electrical circuits, engineering graphics, materials engineering, numerical methods, dynamics, machine design, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, control systems, and advanced laboratory experiences. Students also gain practical skills through integrated design and manufacturing courses and a senior capstone design project. To tailor their education to career interests, students select approved electives in mechanical design, manufacturing, thermal systems, and energy systems design. Elective options include robotics and control, autonomous vehicles, finite element analysis, composite materials, thermodynamics II, energy and sustainability, computational fluid dynamics, HVAC design, fluid machinery, and advanced thermal system design. These electives allow students to specialize in areas such as automation, sustainable energy, manufacturing technologies, and advanced mechanical systems. The program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, preparing graduates to solve complex engineering challenges in industries including aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, robotics, and advanced technology sectors. Through a combination of rigorous technical coursework, laboratory training, design projects, and specialized electives, students develop the analytical, problem-solving, and engineering design skills required for professional success and further study in mechanical engineering and related fields.
