COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in advanced mathematics, analytical reasoning, and quantitative problem-solving. In addition to completing the university’s General Education requirements and the requirements of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students must complete a structured mathematics curriculum that combines core coursework with flexible elective options. The degree includes 34–35 credit hours of General Education courses and 24 credit hours dedicated to LAS competency requirements. Within the major, students must complete all required courses from Group R, totaling 21 credit hours, which provide essential knowledge in fundamental mathematical concepts and advanced theory. Students must also select one course from Group B for 3 credit hours and complete an additional three courses totaling 9 credit hours from Groups A, B, and/or C, allowing them to tailor their studies toward specific interests such as pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, computational mathematics, or related quantitative fields. To reach the 120-credit-hour graduation requirement, students complete 28–29 credit hours of open electives, providing additional flexibility to pursue complementary subjects, internships, research experiences, or secondary areas of expertise. The program develops strong skills in logical reasoning, mathematical modeling, data analysis, abstract thinking, and problem-solving, preparing graduates for careers in data analytics, actuarial science, finance, technology, research, education, government, engineering, and business. It also serves as excellent preparation for graduate study in mathematics, statistics, computer science, economics, operations research, and related disciplines. Wichita State’s emphasis on applied learning ensures students gain practical experience through research projects, internships, and real-world applications of mathematics before graduation. The combination of rigorous coursework, customizable electives, and hands-on learning opportunities makes the BS in Mathematics a versatile degree that equips graduates with highly sought-after quantitative and analytical skills for a wide range of professional and academic pathways.
