COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics with a Statistics Emphasis at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and is designed to build strong foundations in mathematics, probability, and statistical theory while offering flexibility for students to tailor their academic path. In addition to completing the university’s General Education requirements and the requirements of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students must complete 24 credit hours of LAS competency requirements that strengthen broad analytical and communication skills. Within the major, students complete all courses in Group R excluding MATH 613, totaling 18 credit hours, which provide essential mathematical foundations. A major focus of the program is advanced statistics coursework, where students complete 12 credit hours from Group B, including a required sequence in either STAT 571 and STAT 572 (Statistical Methods I and II) or STAT 771 and STAT 772 (Theory of Statistics I and II). These sequences develop deep understanding of statistical modeling, inference, and data interpretation. Students also complete one additional 3-credit-hour course from Group B or C, allowing for some specialization or exploration in related mathematical or applied fields. To reach the 120-credit-hour requirement, students complete 28–29 credit hours of open electives, which may include additional mathematics, statistics, computer science, or interdisciplinary coursework aligned with career goals. The program emphasizes quantitative reasoning, data analysis, probability theory, and statistical computing skills that are essential in modern data-driven industries. Graduates are well prepared for careers such as data analyst, statistician assistant, research analyst, actuarial support roles, and business intelligence analyst positions across sectors including healthcare, government, finance, education, and technology. The degree also provides strong preparation for graduate study in statistics, data science, biostatistics, economics, and related quantitative disciplines. Through Wichita State’s applied learning model, students gain hands-on experience through projects, research, and internships, ensuring they graduate with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed in professional statistical and analytical roles.
