COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics with a Computing Emphasis at Wichita State University is a 120-credit-hour program designed to integrate advanced mathematics with computer science and programming, preparing students for technology-driven careers and graduate study. Alongside the university’s General Education requirements and the requirements of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students complete 24 credit hours of LAS competency requirements that support broad academic and analytical development. Within the major, students must complete all courses in Group R except MATH 613, totaling 18 credit hours, which provide a strong mathematical foundation in higher-level concepts. The program also requires completion of an additional higher-level programming language course to strengthen computational proficiency. Core computing and mathematical integration is built through key required courses including CS 400 (Data Structures), MATH 321 (Discrete Structures I), and MATH 322 (Discrete Structures II), which together develop essential skills in programming logic, algorithmic thinking, and discrete mathematical reasoning. Students then select four additional courses, with at least three drawn from computer science, allowing specialization in areas such as algorithms, operating systems, programming languages, numerical methods, statistical computing, digital design, and mathematical modeling. Options include advanced coursework like CS 560 (Design and Analysis of Algorithms), CS 540 (Operating Systems), CS 510 (Programming Language Concepts), STAT 774 (Statistical Computing I), and MATH 657 (Optimization Theory), among others, enabling students to tailor the degree toward software development, data science, applied mathematics, or computational research. To complete the degree, students take 20–22 credit hours of open electives, which may be used for additional technical courses, internships, or complementary fields of study. The program emphasizes problem-solving, programming proficiency, mathematical modeling, and analytical reasoning, making graduates highly competitive for careers in software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, finance, analytics, and research. It also provides strong preparation for graduate study in mathematics, computer science, and related technical disciplines, while Wichita State’s applied learning model ensures students gain practical, real-world experience before graduation.
