COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Exercise Science with a concentration in Strength and Conditioning at Wichita State University requires a total of 120 credit hours and is designed to prepare students for advanced careers in athletic performance, fitness training, and human performance fields through a combination of rigorous academics and extensive applied learning. Students must complete general education requirements along with 62 credit hours of major coursework while maintaining professional standards, including CPR/AED and first aid certification, a minimum overall GPA of 2.5, a 3.0 GPA in major courses, and a grade of B or higher in key courses such as Concepts in the Prescription of Exercise (EXSC 440), Seminar in Strength and Conditioning (EXSC 541), Advanced Strength and Conditioning (EXSC 542), and Professional Development in Strength and Conditioning (EXSC 543). The curriculum includes foundational science courses like General College Physics I and General Chemistry I, as well as core subjects such as Human Anatomy and Physiology, Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Exercise and Sport Nutrition, and Physiology of Exercise, which build a strong scientific base for understanding human movement and performance. Specialized strength and conditioning courses focus on training design, coaching methods, and professional development, while three sequential internships (EXSC 591, 592, and 593) provide progressive real-world experience in professional athletic and fitness environments. Additional coursework in sport psychology, administration, experiential practicum, and statistical concepts in human performance further enhances both theoretical and practical competencies, and open electives allow students flexibility to complete remaining credit requirements, ultimately producing highly skilled, industry-ready professionals in strength and conditioning.
