COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science (BS) in computer science at Wichita State University is a 120-credit-hour program designed to build strong theoretical foundations and advanced technical skills in computing, software development, and systems design. Of these, 65 credit hours are dedicated to major coursework, which must be completed with a minimum GPA of 2.0, while all prerequisite courses require a grade of C- or better. In addition to general education requirements and College of Engineering standards, students complete a carefully structured curriculum that integrates mathematics, science, engineering, and core computer science concepts. Early coursework focuses on building essential foundations, including Calculus I and II, Discrete Structures I and II, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics, and Physics for Scientists I and II with laboratory work. Students also take introductory engineering and computing courses such as Introduction to Programming, Digital Design, and Assembly Language Programming, which provide a bridge between hardware and software systems. As the program progresses, students move into intermediate and advanced topics including Object-Oriented Programming, Computer Architecture, Data Structures, Software Engineering, Operating Systems, Algorithms, Programming Languages, Database Systems, Computer Networks, and Computer Security. The curriculum culminates in a two-semester senior design project (CS 598 and CS 599), where students apply their knowledge to solve real-world computing problems through collaborative team-based projects. Technical electives (12 credit hours) allow students to specialize in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, or advanced software systems, with most electives required to come from the School of Computing. Supporting courses in ethics, logic, and communication ensure students also develop professional and analytical reasoning skills. The program is offered through the College of Engineering at Wichita State University, and it emphasizes applied learning through labs, projects, and industry-connected experiences. Graduates are well prepared for careers in software engineering, systems analysis, cybersecurity, database management, and advanced computing research, as well as for graduate study in computer science or related fields.
