COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemistry with an ACS Biochemistry option at Wichita State University is a professionally accredited program designed to provide rigorous training in chemistry with a strong emphasis on biological and molecular sciences. The curriculum is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS), meaning it meets national standards for the professional preparation of chemists, and graduates receive ACS certification upon completion. It is particularly recommended for students aiming for advanced study in chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, or related scientific fields, as it builds both depth and breadth in chemical and biological sciences. The program requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, including general education requirements, university competencies, and an extensive set of major courses that integrate chemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics. Core chemistry training includes General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 211–212), Analytical Chemistry and Instrumental Methods (CHEM 523–524), Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 531–532), and Physical Chemistry I and II along with laboratory work (CHEM 545–547). A defining feature of the biochemistry option is advanced study in biomolecular science through Biochemistry I and II (CHEM 662–663) and a dedicated Biochemistry Laboratory (CHEM 664), supported by Independent Study and Research (CHEM 690), which gives students hands-on experience in faculty-led research projects. The program also integrates foundational biological sciences such as General Biology I and II and Molecular Cell Biology, ensuring strong interdisciplinary preparation for life sciences applications. Mathematics and physics requirements, including Calculus I–II and both lecture and lab components of General Physics, provide the quantitative and analytical foundation needed for advanced scientific work.
