COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Applied Engineering with a concentration in Sustainability and Environmental Engineering is a 120-credit-hour program that prepares students to address environmental challenges through engineering, technology, and sustainable resource management. The curriculum includes 32 credit hours of mathematics and natural sciences and 65 credit hours of major coursework, providing a strong foundation in engineering principles, environmental systems, data analysis, and sustainable design. Students complete studies in Calculus, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Energy Resources, and Computational Mathematics using MATLAB to develop the scientific and analytical skills needed for modern engineering applications. The Applied Engineering core introduces key engineering concepts through courses in Statics, Strength and Mechanics of Materials, Statistical Process Control, Decision Analysis in Technology, Energy Management and Sustainability, Engineering Graphics, Manufacturing Methods and Materials, and a sequence of design projects that culminate in a two-semester senior capstone experience. The Sustainability and Environmental Engineering concentration focuses on solving environmental and resource-related challenges through specialized coursework in Circuits Technology, Fluid Systems, Environmental Engineering Technology, Solar and Wind Engineering or Renewable Energy Engineering, Water and Wastewater Treatment, Hydraulics and Hydrology, Structural Analysis and Design, and Materials Engineering. These courses provide knowledge of environmental protection, renewable energy systems, water resource management, infrastructure design, sustainability practices, and environmentally responsible engineering solutions. Students also complete the Engineering+ program, which strengthens professional development, leadership, communication, and career readiness skills. Technical electives allow additional specialization based on individual interests and career objectives. The program emphasizes practical learning through laboratories, engineering projects, research opportunities, and industry-focused experiences that enable students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world environmental and sustainability challenges. Graduates are prepared for careers in sustainability management, environmental engineering support, water and wastewater operations, renewable energy systems, environmental compliance, resource conservation, infrastructure development, manufacturing sustainability, and consulting services. By combining engineering fundamentals, environmental science, renewable energy technologies, sustainable design principles, and hands-on experience, the program equips graduates with the technical expertise and practical skills needed to contribute to sustainable development and environmental stewardship across a wide range of industries and organizations.
