COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Applied Engineering with a concentration in Process Automation is a 120-credit-hour program that prepares students for careers in industrial automation, robotics, manufacturing systems, process control, and advanced technology operations. The curriculum combines 32 credit hours of mathematics and natural sciences with 64 credit hours of major coursework, providing a strong foundation in engineering principles, technical problem-solving, and modern automation technologies. Students complete studies in Calculus, Physics, Statistics, Environmental Science, Energy and Resources, and Computational Mathematics using MATLAB to develop analytical and scientific skills. The Applied Engineering core includes courses in Statics, Strength and Mechanics of Materials, Statistical Process Control, Decision Analysis in Technology, Energy Management and Sustainability, Engineering Graphics, Manufacturing Methods and Materials, and a sequence of design projects culminating in a senior capstone experience. These courses help students understand engineering systems, manufacturing processes, quality control, sustainability, and applied design. The Process Automation concentration focuses on technologies that drive modern automated industries through specialized coursework in Fluid Systems, Circuits Technology, Machine Elements, Industrial Controls and Instrumentation, Robotics Technology, Microcomputer-Based Mechanical Systems Technologies, and Electrical Machines and Electronic Circuits. Students gain knowledge of robotics, programmable control systems, sensors, instrumentation, electrical systems, automation hardware, and intelligent manufacturing technologies that are widely used in advanced production environments. The curriculum also includes the Engineering+ program, which enhances professional skills, leadership development, and career readiness. Technical electives allow students to further specialize in areas aligned with their interests and career goals. Practical learning is a major component of the degree, with laboratories, design projects, and hands-on technical experiences helping students apply classroom concepts to real-world industrial challenges. Graduates are prepared for careers as automation engineers, robotics specialists, process control engineers, manufacturing engineers, instrumentation technicians, industrial systems analysts, maintenance managers, and operations supervisors.
