COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music Education (BME) in Vocal Music Education at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and is designed to prepare students for careers as licensed vocal and choral music educators. The program combines intensive musical training, educational theory, conducting experience, and supervised teaching practice to develop highly skilled music teachers. Students complete 34–35 credit hours of general education coursework along with 18 credit hours of applied music study focused on voice as the primary performance medium and piano proficiency as a supporting skill. Core music courses develop musicianship, aural skills, music literacy, listening abilities, and professional competencies that form the foundation of successful music teaching and performance. Students can also broaden their knowledge through electives in areas such as jazz studies, composition, music technology, counterpoint, and advanced music analysis. Specialized vocal coursework includes studies in music history, orchestration, conducting, vocal techniques, diction, voice pedagogy, and music analysis. Students receive advanced training in choral conducting and score study while gaining practical experience through extensive ensemble participation and performance activities. Vocal electives allow students to strengthen expertise in areas such as Italian, English, and German diction, elementary vernacular instruments, and vocal pedagogy. The program includes significant music education coursework covering educational foundations, diversity in education, literacy strategies, music for special education, elementary and secondary music teaching methods, and pre-student teaching preparation. Students complete teaching internships in both elementary and secondary school music settings, allowing them to apply instructional strategies, classroom management skills, and curriculum planning techniques under professional supervision. Additional studies in string rehearsal methods, wind and percussion rehearsal methods, and choral techniques ensure graduates are prepared to teach a variety of music courses and ensembles. Wichita State’s strong emphasis on applied learning provides valuable real-world classroom experience throughout the degree, helping students build confidence and professional readiness before graduation. Graduates are prepared to obtain teacher licensure and pursue careers as choir directors, vocal music teachers, elementary music educators, private voice instructors, and music program coordinators. The degree also provides excellent preparation for graduate studies in music education, choral conducting, vocal performance, educational leadership, and related fields, equipping graduates with the artistic, instructional, and leadership skills necessary for success in music education.
