COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music Education (BME) in Instrumental Music Education at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and is designed to prepare students for careers as licensed instrumental music educators in schools and other educational settings. The program combines comprehensive musical training, professional education coursework, conducting experience, and extensive classroom teaching practice. Students complete 34–35 credit hours of general education along with specialized music studies that include 18 credit hours of applied music instruction in their primary instrument and piano proficiency courses. The curriculum develops strong musicianship through courses in musicianship, aural skills, music theory, and professional music studies, while elective courses allow students to explore areas such as jazz, composition, music technology, counterpoint, and music analysis. Instrumental music majors also complete advanced coursework in orchestration, conducting, music analysis, and music history, while participating extensively in ensembles that strengthen performance and leadership skills. A significant portion of the degree focuses on music education, providing 30 credit hours of professional teaching preparation. Students study educational foundations, diversity in learning environments, music for special education, literacy strategies, elementary and secondary music teaching methods, and pre-student teaching experiences. Specialized instrumental training includes woodwind, brass, percussion, string, rehearsal, and marching band methods, ensuring graduates are prepared to teach a wide variety of instruments and ensemble types. The program culminates in extensive teaching internships at both elementary and secondary school levels, where students work directly with experienced educators and gain practical classroom experience. Additional requirements such as recital attendance, a senior recital, and conducting studies further enhance professional readiness. Wichita State’s strong emphasis on applied learning ensures that students develop real-world teaching skills through field experiences, internships, and classroom placements before graduation. Graduates are well prepared to obtain teacher licensure and pursue careers as band directors, instrumental music teachers, orchestra directors, private instructors, and music education specialists.
