COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Information Technology and Management Information Systems (ITMIS) at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and combines business knowledge with advanced information technology skills to prepare students for careers in information systems, business technology, data management, and IT leadership. In addition to completing university General Education requirements, students must satisfy the requirements of the AACSB-accredited W. Frank Barton School of Business, including 24 credit hours of BBA core courses and 20 credit hours of advanced standing business requirements. The ITMIS major consists of specialized coursework that develops technical and managerial expertise. Required courses include Fundamentals of Business Application Development, which teaches software and application development concepts; Data Communications and Computer Networks, which focuses on networking technologies and communication systems; Database Management Systems, covering database design, implementation, and administration; Systems Analysis and Design, which teaches students how to evaluate business needs and develop technology solutions; and either Management of the Information Systems Function or Project Management, which develops leadership and management skills for technology projects and IT departments. Students further customize their studies by selecting nine credit hours of major electives from areas such as Dynamic Web Programming, Cloud Computing, Advanced Business Application Development, Data Visualization, Business Analytics, Spreadsheet-Based Decision Modeling, and specialized information systems seminars. The program notes that ITMIS majors are not required to complete MIS 395 in the business core, up to two non-ITMIS courses may count toward the major, and cooperative education credits cannot be applied toward major requirements. Additional open electives allow students to reach the 120-credit-hour graduation requirement and explore complementary interests. The curriculum provides a balance of programming, networking, databases, systems design, cloud technologies, analytics, and business management, preparing graduates to work effectively with both technical specialists and business leaders. Career opportunities include systems analyst, business analyst, database administrator, IT consultant, project manager, network administrator, cloud specialist, data analyst, application developer, and information systems manager. Through its blend of business education, technical training, analytical thinking, and applied learning experiences, the BBA in Information Technology and Management Information Systems equips graduates with the skills needed to support organizational success and lead technology-driven innovation in a rapidly evolving digital business environment.
