COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAED) in Mathematics/English (Middle Level Education) at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 125 credit hours and prepares students to become licensed middle school teachers for grades 5–8 with dual specialization in mathematics and English language arts. Students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.50 and a 2.50 GPA in major content coursework while completing the requirements of the WSU General Education Program and the College of Education. The program combines strong academic preparation in both mathematics and English with structured teacher education training designed to develop effective instructional and classroom management skills for middle school learners. General education coursework includes foundational classes such as College Algebra, College English I and II, and Public Speaking, which build communication, analytical thinking, and quantitative reasoning skills. The mathematics component includes Geometry for College Students, College Trigonometry, Business Calculus, Evolution of Mathematics, Elementary Mathematics, and Mathematics for Middle School Teachers, providing a solid foundation in both mathematical theory and pedagogy. The English component includes Introduction to English Linguistics, History of the English Language (or equivalent options), World Literature, Nature of Fiction, Theory and Practice in Composition, and Literature for Adolescents, along with elective study in multicultural or ethnic literature, strengthening reading, writing, and literary analysis skills. The teacher education sequence is organized into four progressive cores. Core I introduces diversity, classroom foundations, and early field experiences. Core II includes instructional methods in English or mathematics, educational assessment, philosophy of education, and practicum experiences. Core III includes dual teaching internships in both mathematics and English along with literacy strategies and advanced instructional methods. Core IV culminates in full teaching internships in both subject areas, providing extensive supervised classroom experience in real middle school environments. Students must complete all education courses with a minimum grade of B-. Licensure requirements include the Praxis II English/Language Arts and Mathematics Content Knowledge Tests and the Teacher Licensure Capstone. Through the support of the College of Education and the broader university system, graduates gain strong interdisciplinary subject knowledge, pedagogical training, and extensive classroom experience needed for successful careers as middle school educators capable of teaching both mathematics and English effectively.
