COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAED) in History/Mathematics (Middle Level Education) requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and prepares students to become licensed middle school teachers for grades 5–8 with dual subject expertise in history and mathematics. Students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.50 and a 2.50 GPA in major content coursework while completing the requirements of the WSU General Education Program and the College of Education. The program combines broad general education with specialized preparation in both history and mathematics to ensure future teachers are well grounded in subject knowledge and instructional practice. General education includes courses in American politics, world civilizations, anthropology, algebra, statistics, and other foundational areas that support interdisciplinary teaching. The history component includes courses in Kansas history, world civilization (both pre-1500 and post-1500), U.S. history, human geography, and classroom economics, helping students build a deep understanding of historical processes and social studies content. The mathematics component includes College Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Business Calculus, Evolution of Mathematics, Elementary Mathematics, and specialized preparation for middle school mathematics instruction. These courses develop strong quantitative reasoning, mathematical problem-solving skills, and teaching strategies for adolescent learners. Professional education requirements include Introduction to the Education Profession, diversity and cultural studies, educational assessment, philosophy of education, and literacy strategies across content areas. The teacher preparation sequence is structured into four progressive cores. Core I introduces diversity, teaching foundations, and field experiences. Core II focuses on content-specific methods in either history/government or mathematics, along with practicum experiences. Core III includes teaching internships in both subject areas, literacy instruction strategies, and advanced instructional methods. Core IV culminates in full teaching internships in both history and mathematics classrooms, providing extensive supervised teaching experience. Students must complete all teacher education courses with a minimum grade of B-. Licensure requirements include the Praxis II History and Mathematics Content Knowledge Tests and the Teacher Licensure Capstone course. Through the support of the College of Education and Wichita State University, graduates gain strong dual-subject expertise, instructional skills, and practical classroom experience needed for successful careers as middle school history and mathematics teachers.
