COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAED) in French (PreK–12) requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and prepares students for licensure as French language teachers from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.50 and a 2.50 GPA in major content courses while completing the requirements of the WSU General Education Program and the College of Education. The program requires 33 credit hours of advanced French coursework beyond the FREN 204 level, providing extensive training in French language, linguistics, literature, grammar, phonetics, conversation, composition, and civilization. Required courses include Selected French Readings, Intermediate Conversation and Composition, Linguistics and World Languages, Intermediate French Readings, Advanced French Phonetics, Advanced French Conversation, Advanced French Composition and Grammar, and Contemporary French Civilization. Students also complete at least 9 credit hours of advanced literature courses covering French literary traditions from the medieval, seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries or specialized seminars in French. Professional education requirements include Introduction to the Education Profession, Human Growth and Development, educational assessment, diversity, exceptionalities, literacy strategies, educational philosophy, ethics, and world language teaching methods. The teacher preparation sequence progresses through four stages that combine coursework with field experiences and practicum placements. Students participate in preteaching internships at both the elementary and secondary levels and complete specialized methods courses designed for world language instruction. The program culminates in a full-semester PreK–12 World Languages Teaching Internship and a teaching internship seminar that provide extensive supervised classroom experience. To qualify for licensure, candidates must successfully complete the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) examination, the Praxis Content Knowledge Test, and the ACTFL Advisory Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) with a minimum rating of Advanced Low. Students must also complete the Teacher Licensure Capstone course. Through the support of the College of Education and Wichita State University, graduates develop advanced French language proficiency, cultural competence, instructional expertise, and classroom experience needed for successful careers as French teachers across all PreK–12 grade levels.
