COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAED) in Biology (Secondary Education) requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and prepares students for teaching biology and science at the middle and secondary school levels. To graduate, students must maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.50 as well as a 2.50 GPA in major coursework. In addition to completing Wichita State University’s general education requirements, students must fulfill College of Education and biology-specific requirements. The science curriculum includes General Biology I and II, Human Anatomy and Physiology, General Microbiology, General Ecology, Genetics, General Chemistry I and II, Science Investigations: Physics, and Energy, Resources and Environment. These courses provide a comprehensive understanding of biological and physical sciences needed for effective science instruction. Students also complete professional education coursework covering human development, diversity, exceptionalities, cultural issues, educational assessment, literacy strategies, educational philosophy, ethics, technology integration, and science teaching methods. The teacher preparation sequence is organized into four progressive stages, known as Core I through Core IV, which include classroom observations, practicum experiences, content-specific teaching methods, and extensive teaching internships in secondary science classrooms. A grade of B- or higher is required in all teacher education courses, ensuring strong preparation for professional practice. During the final stages of the program, students participate in supervised teaching internships that provide substantial hands-on experience working directly with middle and high school students. To qualify for teacher licensure, candidates must successfully complete the Praxis II Science Content Knowledge examination and the Teacher Licensure Capstone course. The program combines rigorous scientific training with extensive classroom experience, helping graduates develop the content knowledge, instructional skills, leadership abilities, and professional competencies necessary for successful careers as licensed biology and science teachers. Graduates are well prepared to teach grades 6–12, contribute to science education, and pursue further study or leadership opportunities in education through the support of the College of Applied Learning and Wichita State University.
