COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) in Media Arts with a concentration in Filmmaking at Wichita State University requires a total of 120 credit hours and is designed to provide comprehensive training in film production, storytelling, cinematography, editing, sound design, visual effects, and professional media practices. Students must complete university general education requirements along with 21 credit hours of Media Arts core courses and 54 credit hours in the filmmaking concentration. The program requires students to earn a minimum grade of C in all designated C-required courses and successfully pass a mid-program review after completing 59 credit hours, ensuring they demonstrate the skills and progress necessary to continue in the major. Core coursework introduces students to media arts, aesthetics, software, digital media sound, professional portfolio development, business practices, legal issues, and practical production experiences through multiple practicum courses. The filmmaking concentration provides specialized training in digital filmmaking, acting for digital arts, film history, directing, cinematography, editing, screenwriting, video storytelling, storyboarding, visual effects, and sound for picture. Students develop expertise in both creative and technical aspects of filmmaking through courses such as Directing for Film, Cinematography I and II, Writing for Film and Television, Scriptwriting, Principles of Video Production, Compositing and Visual Effects, and Film Studies.
