COURSE CURRICULUM

Wichita State University’s Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) in Media Arts with a concentration in Audio Production is a 120-credit-hour program designed for students seeking careers in music production, recording, sound engineering, game audio, film sound, live sound, and audio technology. The program combines creative and technical training with hands-on experience in professional studios and state-of-the-art media facilities. Students complete university general education requirements along with a comprehensive media arts core that introduces media aesthetics, software, digital sound, professional portfolio development, business practices, legal issues, and practicum experiences. The audio production concentration provides extensive instruction in music theory, aural skills, music technology, recording techniques, digital audio workstations, music business, audio engineering, and sound design. Specialized courses cover classical and modern recording methods, audio editing and mixing, mastering, location sound recording for film and media, acoustics, microphones, immersive audio, electronic music production, live sound design, game audio, analog audio systems, advanced sound for digital media, and emerging music technology topics. Students also complete a required mid-program review after 59 credit hours to assess academic progress and professional readiness. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on both creative artistry and technical expertise, preparing graduates to work across diverse sectors of the audio industry. Additional electives allow students to customize their studies according to career interests, and students may also pursue internships or a minor to broaden their professional qualifications. A minimum grade of C is required in designated courses, ensuring mastery of essential skills and knowledge. Consistent with Wichita State’s applied learning philosophy, all students must complete a structured experiential learning sequence through Media Arts Practicum I, II, and III, where they gain real-world industry experience and develop professional portfolios before graduation. This combination of academic study, practical training, and industry-focused learning prepares graduates to enter the workforce with strong technical competencies, creative problem-solving abilities, and professional experience in modern audio production environments.
