COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) – Bilingual Option at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and is designed for students seeking advanced proficiency in two languages while developing strong linguistic, cultural, and analytical skills. In addition to completing the university’s general education requirements and the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences competency areas, students complete a structured language-focused curriculum. The major requires 12 credit hours beyond the intermediate level in Language A and another 12 credit hours beyond the intermediate level in Language B, allowing students to achieve significant fluency in both languages. Students also complete MCLL 351 Linguistics and World Languages and a linguistics course such as Introduction to Romance Linguistics, which helps them understand language structure, development, and cultural connections. Additional language-related electives may include travel seminars, language and culture courses, workshops, literature studies, teaching options, special studies, or transfer credits. Depending on the languages selected, students must satisfy distribution requirements through advanced coursework. German students complete at least two courses in areas such as readings, conversation, grammar, and composition, while Latin students take at least two 500-level courses. French and Spanish students complete either one 300-level and one 500-level course or two 500-level courses. Open electives are used to reach the 120-credit-hour graduation requirement and can be selected with advisor guidance to support career goals or personal interests. A distinctive feature of the program is its applied learning requirement, which is fulfilled through an applied or research experience integrated into MCLL 351. This experience may involve areas such as sociolinguistics, semiotics, or other applied linguistics projects that connect classroom learning with real-world language applications. The program prepares graduates for careers in international business, education, translation, interpretation, government, diplomacy, tourism, media, nonprofit organizations, and global communications while also providing excellent preparation for advanced study in languages, linguistics, international relations, education, law, and related fields. Through intensive bilingual training and practical learning experiences, students develop valuable communication and cross-cultural skills that are highly sought after in today’s global workforce.
