COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) – Latin Specialization at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and provides students with advanced knowledge of the Latin language, classical literature, linguistics, and ancient cultures. In addition to completing the university’s General Education requirements and the requirements of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students must complete a specialized Latin curriculum designed to develop high-level language proficiency and cultural understanding. The specialization requires a minimum of 30 credit hours beyond LATN 106 or its equivalent. Required coursework includes Advanced Grammar and Composition, which strengthens students’ mastery of Latin grammar, syntax, writing, and translation skills, and Linguistics and World Languages, which explores language structure, language development, and the relationships among world languages. Students must also complete at least 24 additional credit hours in Latin beyond LATN 112 or its equivalent, allowing them to study advanced Latin language, classical texts, Roman history, literature, culture, and related topics in greater depth. Open electives provide flexibility for students to pursue complementary interests or additional academic specializations while reaching the 120-credit-hour graduation requirement. The program emphasizes reading comprehension, translation, linguistic analysis, critical thinking, research, and written communication skills through intensive study of Latin and classical civilization. Students gain a deeper understanding of the foundations of Western culture and the influence of Latin on modern languages, literature, law, medicine, science, and philosophy. The degree is particularly valuable for students interested in teaching Latin at the PreK–12 level through additional teacher preparation, as well as those considering careers in education, translation, publishing, communications, cultural institutions, museums, libraries, government, and nonprofit organizations. The strong analytical and language skills developed through the program also provide excellent preparation for graduate studies in classics, linguistics, history, archaeology, education, law, theology, literature, and related disciplines. Through its combination of advanced language study, classical scholarship, cultural exploration, and applied learning opportunities, the BA in MCLL–Latin Specialization equips graduates with versatile skills and a strong academic foundation for a wide range of professional and educational pathways.
