COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and is designed to provide students with a broad liberal arts education combined with a strong foundation in mathematics. In addition to fulfilling the university’s General Education requirements and the requirements of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students complete a structured mathematics curriculum that emphasizes analytical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and problem-solving skills. The degree includes 34–35 credit hours of General Education coursework and 36 credit hours dedicated to LAS competency requirements. Within the major, students must complete all required courses in Group R, totaling 21 credit hours, which provide essential mathematical knowledge and theoretical foundations. Students are also required to complete MATH 531, Introduction to the History of Mathematics, a 3-credit-hour course that explores the historical development of mathematical ideas, concepts, and discoveries across different cultures and time periods. In addition, students select three more courses, totaling 9 credit hours, from Groups A, B, or C, allowing them to customize the degree according to their interests in areas such as pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or advanced mathematical topics. To reach the 120-credit-hour graduation requirement, students complete 16–17 credit hours of open electives, giving them flexibility to pursue complementary studies, internships, research opportunities, or a secondary academic focus. The BA in Mathematics is ideal for students seeking a versatile degree that can be combined with fields such as education, business, economics, computer science, or the sciences.
