COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in History at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and provides students with a comprehensive understanding of historical events, cultures, societies, and ideas while developing advanced research, writing, analytical, and communication skills. In addition to meeting university General Education requirements and the standards of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students must complete at least 33 credit hours in history, with a minimum of 15 credit hours earned at Wichita State. The major begins with foundational courses including Introduction to Historical Research and Writing and Historiography, which teach students how historians conduct research, analyze sources, construct arguments, and interpret historical evidence. Students must also complete a course in United States history, either covering the colonial period through 1865 or the period since 1865, along with a world history course focused on world civilizations, Western civilization, or other global historical topics. To broaden their historical knowledge, students complete an additional 12 credit hours in history, including at least six upper-division courses at the 300 level or above. The curriculum further requires advanced study through three specialized courses at the 500- or 600-level, with one course each in ancient and medieval history, modern European history, and American history, including Latin American history. This structure ensures that students gain exposure to diverse historical periods, regions, and perspectives while developing expertise in historical analysis. Open electives allow students to customize their degree and combine history with other disciplines such as political science, education, journalism, law, international studies, or business. The program emphasizes critical thinking, research proficiency, persuasive writing, problem-solving, and effective communication—skills that are highly valued across many professions. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, government service, public administration, museums, archives, historical preservation, journalism, nonprofit organizations, and research institutions. The degree also provides excellent preparation for graduate studies in history, law, public policy, political science, library science, and related fields.
