COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) Field Major at Wichita State University requires a minimum of 120 total credit hours and is designed to give students a flexible, interdisciplinary academic pathway that combines three or more fields of study to better understand cultural, social, and behavioral aspects of human conduct. In addition to completing the WSU General Education Program and Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) requirements, students must complete at least 36 credit hours specifically for the Field Major, with careful planning done in consultation with an LAS academic advisor to ensure the course combination is academically appropriate and approved by the college. Within these 36 credit hours, students must take a minimum of 18 credit hours in a primary area of study and at least 9 credit hours in each of two allied areas, allowing them to build depth in one discipline while gaining breadth across two additional fields. At least 12 of the 36 credit hours must be upper-division coursework, ensuring advanced-level academic engagement, and the first two areas of study must come from LAS or historically LAS disciplines, while the third area may extend across departments, colleges, or even occupational themes depending on career or academic goals. Eligible LAS disciplines include fields such as economics, communication sciences and disorders, art history, theatre, music composition, and aging studies, among others, while non-LAS courses may be used in the third area when approved. The structure allows students to design a highly personalized degree aligned with their interests and future plans, whether for employment or graduate study. The remaining credits, including general education, LAS competencies, and open electives, bring the total to 120 credit hours, making this program a flexible yet academically structured option for interdisciplinary learning.
