COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Chemistry at Wichita State University is structured as a 120-credit-hour program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in chemical sciences while also offering flexibility through general education, language study, and elective coursework. In addition to university general education requirements (34–35 credit hours) and Fairmount College requirements, students complete a core set of chemistry and supporting science courses that include General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 211–212), Analytical Chemistry with Instrumental Methods (CHEM 523–524), Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 531–532), and Physical Chemistry I and II along with a Physical Chemistry Lab (CHEM 545–547). These courses ensure students develop a solid understanding of chemical principles, laboratory techniques, and analytical thinking skills. The program also requires foundational preparation in mathematics and physics, including Precalculus, Calculus I–III, and both lecture and lab components of General Physics, which support advanced chemical study and quantitative problem-solving. A distinctive feature of the BA pathway is its emphasis on breadth alongside scientific depth, including a requirement of world language study beyond the introductory level, helping students build communication and global awareness skills valuable in many professional fields. Students can also customize their academic path by choosing additional electives within chemistry or related disciplines, including options in biochemistry or inorganic chemistry through approved course substitutions. Applied learning is a key component of the degree, with students required to complete a research or experiential learning requirement through CHEM 690 or CHEM 481, ensuring hands-on experience in laboratory or faculty-mentored research settings. This structure prepares graduates for a wide range of outcomes, including careers in healthcare, education, environmental science, laboratory technology, regulatory work, or further study in graduate and professional programs.
