COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art with an Art History Emphasis is a 120-credit-hour degree that combines intensive study of art history with a broad liberal arts education, preparing students for careers and advanced study in art history, museum studies, conservation, cultural heritage, and art criticism. The program requires 39 credit hours of art and art history coursework, a minimum GPA of 2.5 within the major, and grades of C or higher in all art-related courses. Students must also demonstrate reading proficiency in at least one non-English language, typically French or German, to support research using primary historical sources, although other languages may be approved. In addition, all students are required to complete a minor or second major in a related humanities or social science discipline, creating a strong interdisciplinary academic foundation. The curriculum begins with introductory studies in art and design, followed by a Mid-Program Review and additional introductory coursework in selected art disciplines. Students then progress through a comprehensive sequence of art history courses, including introductory surveys, theories of art and culture, upper-level historical and thematic studies, specialized seminar-style topics, and advanced 500-level courses. These courses develop expertise in historical research, visual analysis, critical interpretation, and scholarly writing while exploring artistic traditions across different cultures and time periods. A required internship provides valuable professional experience and allows students to apply classroom knowledge in museums, galleries, archives, cultural organizations, or related institutions. Elective coursework supports the language requirement, minor or second major, writing-intensive studies, and other academic interests that complement career goals. The program also requires students to complete at least 45 upper-division credit hours, ensuring substantial advanced academic preparation. Through its emphasis on research, critical thinking, historical inquiry, language proficiency, professional experience, and interdisciplinary learning, the degree equips students with the skills needed for careers in museums, galleries, archives, arts administration, cultural institutions, publishing, and heritage organizations. It also provides excellent preparation for graduate studies in art history, museum studies, conservation, archaeology, history, cultural studies, and related fields, while fostering a deep understanding of the role of art and visual culture in shaping human societies throughout history.
