COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in International Relations at Webster University requires the completion of 36 credit hours, structured to provide students with a strong foundation in the theories, methodologies, and key areas of the international relations field. The program begins with Introduction to International Relations, which offers an essential overview of the discipline’s major concepts and global dynamics. Research Methods and Perspectives follows, equipping students with the skills needed to conduct rigorous academic and policy-oriented research.A significant component of the program is the capstone experience, which can be fulfilled either through the Capstone in International Relations course or by completing a thesis. Students who choose the thesis option must complete both the Thesis course (6 credit hours) and the University Thesis Requirement (0 credit hours). This allows students to deeply explore a specific topic within international relations and develop advanced research and analytical writing skills, especially beneficial for those considering doctoral studies or academic careers.In addition to the core courses, students must take two courses from the Comparative Politics Cluster, offering insights into political systems, governance, and development across different countries. They must also complete four courses from the International Politics Cluster, which focuses on diplomacy, international organizations, security studies, foreign policy, and global governance. These clusters allow students to tailor their studies toward areas of specific interest or professional relevance.To complete the degree requirements, students are also required to take 9 credit hours of graduate electives. These electives provide flexibility, enabling students to explore additional topics within international relations or related disciplines such as public policy, security studies, or regional studies.
