COURSE CURRICULUM

The core distribution for the BA in Art provides a comprehensive foundation in both creative practice and critical analysis, preparing students for a well-rounded understanding of visual art. Students begin with foundational courses such as Creative Strategies, Observational Drawing, and Materials and Making, which introduce essential concepts, techniques, and materials used in the creative process. Digital Visualizations provides students with skills in digital tools and visual communication, while the First-Year Exhibition offers an early opportunity to present their work in a professional setting. The curriculum includes courses in art history such as Current Art and Intercultural History of Art, giving students both contemporary and global perspectives on artistic traditions and movements. Students also complete a 3000-level or higher art history course to deepen their historical and theoretical understanding.The program includes regular critiques through DADAH Critique and Senior Critique, helping students develop confidence in discussing and evaluating their own work and that of others. Professional Practice for Artists prepares students for careers in the arts by covering topics such as portfolio development, exhibition planning, and the business side of art. The program culminates in the DADAH BA/BFA Exhibition, showcasing student work in a final capstone experience.Additionally, students must complete six hours of drawing electives to further develop their skills in this fundamental discipline. They also complete fifteen hours of studio courses from various areas, encouraging exploration across media such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and printmaking. These studio courses help students build technical skills and find their preferred modes of expression. Together, this structured yet flexible curriculum supports the development of each student’s individual artistic voice while providing the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in the contemporary art world.
